Speaking of Books...

One of my biggest passions is reading.  I simply LOVE to read.  I love the escape feel of cracking open an adventure not knowing where it will take you.  It's so much more personal than a movie!  You don't have to know the interpretation of others, discuss your favorite genre or share the experience at all. You can simply kick back, choose what world you want to enter and savor the moments.  I could and have read for hours.  My favorite authors are Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison and Stephenie Meyer.  Of course there are several stunning writers in the world and I never pass up the opportunity to enjoy someone news' work, but favs are favs..what can ya do.

Anne Rice is just all around brilliant!  She has written books on vampires of course, but also about witches, angels and the newest-werewolves.  She also has a nice erotic collection including the Beauty series, a different take on the story of Sleeping Beauty.  Due to her ability to enthrall her readers with exceptional characters and their love/hate with themselves, she is my absolute #1 favorite author.  SBF and I flew to AZ last year to attend a book signing for Songs of the Seraphim.  I brought my complete first addition hard cover vampire series novels with me. She signed every one of them with a smile.

I've written reviews of some of her books on Good Reads and have reposted them here for your viewing pleasure and comment. Good Reads is a great website where you can tell all your read happy friends what you're reading and see what they are reading too.  I just love it!  One of my coworkers is in my buddy list there and got me started on the Kim Harrison books.  I am grateful every time I crack a new book in her Rachel Mariana Morgan series.  Anyhoo...Enjoy the reviews of some of my fav below, leave your comments.. or, tell me what you're reading, I would love to hear it! :)

Memnoch the Devil-I like this book for the ideas in it and of course the writing style of the author.  The interpretation of heaven, hell, religion etc.  It's very fascinating and offers a great perspective on the "what if's" in the universe.  I was horrified at the end until I read the next book in the series.  It is truly remarkable what Anne Rice can do.  The ending almost requires you to pick up the next in the series and begin it immediately.  This book could be read by someone who is not familiar with the vampires (if there is such a poor soul out there) and it would still make sense- but really, reading them all is the best way to go.  I love the description of Memnoch and god, heaven and  hell and the story of creation that Anne Rice provides here.  She explains why god does not intervene in the path of his creation and how the war in heaven came to be.  What a fantastic story, what a fantastic addition to the series!  The story of Dor and her father is another great twist!  This book also so just how loved Lestat is among his kind and what they would do to keep their brat prince from harm.  Gotta love the vampire family!

Merrick-There are two books in the vampire series I hold higher than the others; Merrick and Queen of the Damned.  The story of Merrick and David is a great addition and brings David alive as one of the vampire family.  What a wonderful addition to the family we get in Merrick as well.  She is so seductive and intense.  I love the idea of her and hope that she appears again in future books.  I also love the story of David in this book.  Davids mortal years are explained in this story and his history with the Talamasca.  We also learn a great deal of his relationship with Aaron.  There are some interesting revelations into the mind of David Talbot and his time spent finding his way as a youth.  A great read!  As soon as it was finished I wanted to read it again.  Merrick is such a strong character! This book makes me respect Tale of the Body Thief a bit more for introducing David to the family.  Without him, there would be no Merrick and that would be a crying shame! Also, the story of Luis and Claudia comes to a close in this story.  Tragic and gripping!  This book also hints at the history of the Mayfairs and the inevitable combining of the two stories.  I just love Anne Rice!

Queen of the Damned-This is my favorite Anne Rice book!  Akasha, the goddess- my goddess! :)  How can you not love a vampire queen gone mad and taken to killing all the men in the world??... ah yes save for one the brat prince!  Sounds like a great plan to me!  That was left out of the movie!  Among many many other things! Speaking of the movie, although I thought it was a pretty good vampire flick and Aaliyah is perfect for Akasha, besides the names, there wasn't much resemblance to the book.  I was disappointed with how far it fell from from the story line.  Anne Rice truly captivates me in this tale however and this book is gripping.  How she describes Akasha & Enkil and ties their existence to the Egyptian legends of Isis and Osiris is awesome!  She explains a story of creation for her vampires that is incomparable!  It is truly captivating, and believable!   This book is a MUST read for all Lestat and/or Anne Rice fans.

The Mummy-Ramses.. my tall dark and handsome prince!  I am an Anne Rice fan and adore all her characters but she broke the mold with Ramses!  Again she visits the old Egyptian stories and brings the past to life with her tale!  I can picture the archeological digs, the suspense and forbidden finds.  It makes me what to comb the desert myself in hopes to find the man of my dreams hidden away for centuries!  I love the passion and love/lust Anne brings through in this book.  I also really like the new breed of immortals she has created in this story.   My only problem is that it says another book is coming and so far, no series!  I need more stories of Ramses and Cleopatra!  The ending makes me crave another addition episode with Ramses and all the characters.  Anyone who enjoys the stories of the vampires and Mayfairs will enjoy this story as well.  A  just read and addition to every fans book shelf!

Blood and Gold-This is a great book.  I love the story of Marius, his sacrifices and history etc.  It gives a better perspective of why he abandoned Armand.  It really sort of bothered me that there were so many unanswered questions in the Armand tale.  This book makes me crave for more Bianca! Now that I wrote this, I see that my fellow Anne Rice fans agree! I too would love to listen to Marius share his life with me by a warm fire.  I could listen for hours! Thorne is a lucky blood drinker to be so privileged.  This book is a must read for any Anne Rice fan.  It is interesting too in that it follows some parts of history that I adore in her books. Egypt, Rome, Constantinople, Venice. The art work of the era- the master pieces by Botecelli are seen through the eyes of a vampire.  The heartbreaking tale of the love affair between Marius and Pandora is a tantalizing hook factor.   Love it!

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty-Anne Rice is fabulously twisted!  This series was recommended to me by many friends.  When I finally began to read it- disturbing as it could be at times, it always kept me itching for more.  Okay, so it's not one that I would lend to a co-worker or prudish family member, but it is so seductive and awe inspiring!  The first book started out unnerving to me but still, I could not put it down!  Perhaps I was unprepared for the world I was about to enter but I loved it once I was in.  It such an intriguing play on the story of Sleeping Beauty.  Of the three, I enjoyed the last the best.  It was a great ending to the tale and shows just how someone can change based on their environment and experience.  The descriptive narrative of this series puts you right in the action in body and mind!  Definitely porno for Anne fans but a treasure in my collection of her work.

Blackwood Farm-I felt that this book had a few great stories in it but all in all, I have to admit to missing Lestat!  Having no idea what has happened to him since his dance with the devil, I am starting to have withdraws!  Lestat is my crack!  On the other hand, the story of Quinn and Goblin is rather entertaining.  Having read the story of the Mayfair's, I enjoyed their incorporation into the vampire clan.  Although this began with Merrick, Mona is a perfect match for the new brood.  To be honest, I thought the character Petronia was stupid.  Sorry Anne, I adore you, but a hermaphrodite?  Really?  I was hoping for maybe Bianca!!  Of course I am and will always be a die hard Anne Rice fan and love everything that she has written.  I am happy to learn as I dive into Blood Canticle that the story of Quinn continues...
